Asaka Sosui (Canal) was a major project undertaken in the early days of the Meiji Period to irrigate barren fields.
The key to the success of this project was one particular sluice gate.
Introducing the Juryokkyo Sluice Gate, a symbol of Asaka Sosui (Canal), Japan Heritage.

Found on Nippashi River flowing to the west of Lake Inawashiro.
It is used to adjust the water level of Lake Inawashiro to water the fields of Asaka.
Work in the Asaka Sosui project began with the construction of this sluice.
The stone pillars of the sluice gate and 16 stone arches with a history of over 100 years are of high historical value, and they were designated as civil engineering heritages (Japan Society of Civil Engineers) in 2002.
It was also the site of a fierce battle in the Boshin War.

The project was promoted by Okubo Toshimichi in the modernization of Japan.
It was the first project launched by the Meiji government, forming the basis for the growth of Koriyama (Asaka region).
It was designated a Japan Heritage (Agency for Cultural Affairs) in 2016 as "the single conduit that paved the way to the future."
