Oze is renowned for its stroll through the Ozegahara Marsh. But in the Oze National Park on the Fukushima Prefecture side, there are many mountainous areas where you can experience a real mountaineering adventure such as Mt. Hiuchi, Mt. Aizukoma, Mt. Tashiro, and Mt. Taishaku.
Here we will be introducing six recommended courses.
A typical course for beginners. As it is a short course, it is perfect for visiting several times during the season to enjoy the changes in the scenery. The route is also a part of the Aizu-Numata old road, which has been around since the Edo period. Lake Ozenuma is still a popular destination for visitors to meet and socialize to this day.
This route will take visitors around the foot of Mt. Hiuchi where the Tashiro marsh and the forest zone repeat, and to other scenic spots of Fukushima Oze, including Sanjo Falls, Ozegahara Marsh, and Lake Ozenuma. You can stay overnight at either the Onsen hot spring area or the Miharashi area. The following day, visitors will pass Lake Ozenuma and return to Miike by bus from Numayama-toge Pass.
After passing through Kumazawa-tashiro marsh, which boasts one of the most beautiful scenery in Oze, visitors can enjoy traversing, the steep climbs along the streams, and the challenging climb up Mt. Hiuchi, the highest peak in Oze. From the two summits, visitors can gaze across the entire mountain range in all four directions.
In regards to Mt. Aizukoma, Kyuya Fukada said, "Of the many summits I've gone to, this was one of the finest". The course includes a round trip from Komanoike to Mt. Chumon and a return trip along the Fujimi-rindo Trail. Visitors can enjoy the splendid ridgelines, which are famous as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan.
In this course, visitors can traverse Mt. Tashiro, popular for its distinctive mountain features with a large marshland at the summit, as well as the splendid Mt. Taishaku deep in the mountains of Oku-aizu. Located on the dividing line between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, there are many kinds of plants to discover.
